The Count of Monte Cristo is digitally re-mastered for 2012

Robert Donat chose to make only one film in Hollywood, The Count of Monte Cristo (1934), adapted from Alexandre Dumas’ novel, and directed by Rowland V. Lee.

Robert, of course, starred as the eponymous Count, Edmond Dantes, with Elissa Landi playing his love interest, Mercedes. Although necessarily simplified to suit the length of a feature film, this version of Dumas’ enduring classic is still arguably the best, courtesy of Robert’s fine performance as a wronged man intent on revenge, and is famously referenced in the 2005 film V for Vendetta.

We were delighted to discover that a digitally re-mastered DVD will be released on 7 February 2012, from Hen’s Tooth Video, and available via Amazon and other leading DVD retailers. It is currently available to pre-order at Movies Unlimited.

Once we have seen the DVD, we will be able to update you on how the quality of picture and sound has benefited from the digital re-mastering process, but we are hopeful it will be a considerable improvement on the currently available print.
